I biked past athlete's village today and had to go through an adjacent alley between the village and 2nd avenue. Totally decrepit buildings, warehouses look like they're rotting. Still a bit of an ugly area...I wish they had cleaned up more before the athletes hit town.
good point, i think the whole of the east side downtown is pretty untouched.

East side downtown is riddled with problems. Only past few recent years the government started to work on the issue of homelessness because it dawned on them it might not look good when the eyes of the world are upon us. They tried to 'fix the problem' by imposing a law to get the homeless off the street. When people rightfully protested, they dropped that idea. However the issue of homelessness is still not being addressed adequately.

I am ashamed to live in a country where we have billions to spend on a giant party and we don't have money to spend on the less fortunate people of our society. The values of the society are reflected on the way it treats the less fortunate and also the way the society treats animals.

We've a long way to go. This is not our 'moment to shine'. This is a moment of embarrassment.
